Daily Betting Insights: Wednesday, January 28, 2026 | NHL & NBA Picks
The NBA model went 6-1 again last night. That's back to back 6-1 days. Wild.
NHL had a solid night too. Finished 6-4 after correcting my math on stream. Montreal came through as a spicy underdog pick. Utah beat Florida, which hurt as a Panthers fan but paid off for anyone who tailed. Boston held off Nashville. Vancouver continues to be a fade, losing 5-2 to San Jose.
The misses were Buffalo over Toronto (Leafs got demolished), Winnipeg over New Jersey, and Detroit laying an egg against LA.
My personal picks went 5-3. Profitable night.
Today's Picks
Light NHL slate tonight. Only three games, and we're only taking one.
NHL
CBJ vs. PHI → CBJ Model gives Columbus a 65% chance. Philly is 2-6-2 in their last 10. Columbus is 13-8-4 at home and 6-4 in their last 10. Market has it at 56%, we have it at 65%. Good value.
Skipping Colorado vs Ottawa. Market says 60%, model says 60%. No edge.
Skipping Rangers vs Islanders. Classic matchup but the numbers don't support a play. Rangers are 2-7-1 in their last 10. When the models agree at this odds ratio, the signal has gone 1-6. Just stay away.
NBA
CLE → CLE
NYK → NYK
CHA → CHA
All three from the verified value widget. That filter is 5-2 since we launched it. These are slight favorites or underdogs where the model sees more value than the market.
Why NBA is Easier to Model
Hockey has more variance. A goalie can steal a game out of nowhere. You're working with 30 shots or less. One weird bounce changes everything.
Basketball has more possessions, more data points, more predictable outcomes. Doesn't mean it's easy. Just easier. The favorites win more often and dramatic upsets are rarer. You don't see nights where every underdog wins like you sometimes do in hockey.
The NBA model is at 57-26 right now. 68% win rate. That won't hold forever, but even leveling out around 60% would be great.
Headlines
Demko is out for the rest of the season. Vancouver fans are just ready for next year at this point.
Reaves suspended three games for a hit on Bozner.
The Olympic break is coming, which means less hockey. We'll make some Olympic plays but it'll be mostly NBA during that stretch.
