Playoff picture coming into focus as stretch run begins

Lost 3-4 yesterday with Phoenix blowing a halftime lead. Today I'm on Cleveland -2 against the defending champion Thunder, plus Denver, Detroit and New York.

Lost the thread yesterday. 3-4 across the board, and the one that really stung was Phoenix +7.5 in a game they led by 12 at halftime. That's the break killing you right there. Model went 5-5 which is basically break even, so we're even on the day. Not a disaster but not what we wanted coming out of the break.

Playoff Picture Thoughts

Looking at where things stand, the Thunder are doing Thunder things at the top of the West. Defending champs, still stacked, still the team to beat. Denver right behind them which makes sense with Jokic doing Jokic things. Cleveland quietly put together a hell of a season in the East - they're not just competitive, they're legit title contenders.

But here's what gets me about the East: Detroit. The Pistons have the best record in the conference and nobody seems to want to talk about it. They're physical, they defend, and they hit the 40-20 mark which (shoutout Phil Jackson's rule) is basically a prerequisite for championship runs. They're not sneaking up on anyone anymore but they're still being undervalued in some of these futures markets.

The Knicks are the Knicks. Brunson carrying everything, and if McBride gets healthy they're dangerous. If he doesn't, they're a first-round exit at best. That's the swing piece for that entire franchise right now.

Today's Picks

NBA

Cleveland -2 vs Oklahoma City → CLE This line is too tight. Cleveland is playing at home, they're rested, and they've been the more complete team since January. Thunder are great but this is a letdown spot after the break. Take the points.

Denver -5.5 vs Minnesota → DEN Timberwolves have struggled against top-tier competition this year. Denver at home with the best player on the floor. Lay the points.

Detroit -3 vs Brooklyn → DET Pistons at home, playing their best basketball. Brooklyn is fighting for ping pong balls. This should be comfortable.

New York -6.5 vs Toronto → NYK Raptors are shipping games. Knicks need this to stay in the playoff hunt. Brunson goes to work.

Strategy Note

The model is fading home dogs today. Four home underdogs on the slate and the system has them at 38% or worse. That's rare. I'm leaning into that data rather than my gut on a few of these. Trust the process.
